What I Learnt in Isolation

Covid-19 feels like it came all at once, I never had time to register everything that was going on. The initial shock that came with all this change had me feeling anxious about what life was going to look like in 2020.

It has been about one month since restrictions were lifted in New South Wales, and I wanted to reflect on what I learnt about myself during the isolation period. I wanted to share these realisations to show that there really is a silver lining to all of this, especially right now with Melbourne reintroducing a stage three lock down.

1. importance of days off

Pre covid-19, I was working everyday and flying interstate at least twice a week. With this fast pace lifestyle, I struggled a lot mentally. I constantly felt like I had to be doing something, from training, to working, as well as socialising, I never had time to just relax. This go-go lifestyle led to regular anxiety attacks and countless sleepless nights.

During our lock down period, work slowed down, forcing me to slow down too. Apart from the first few weeks where I felt anxious about the uncertainty of everything, I have actually felt the best mentally I have in a long time. I have been sleeping like a baby, and I have felt a lot more at ease. The time off was a blessing in disguise.

This isn’t saying I don’t miss work and travelling, I really do! However, this shift in my mental health has made me realise how important it is to take time off when I’m feeling drained, and to give myself “me” time.

Tommy and I love to go out for meals, especially breakfast! During Isolation, we cooked everyday. We created restaurant quality meals for half the price, and our bank accounts thanked us for it.

Being forced to stay home was an important eye opener on how we can save the money we both work so hard for.

3. How important it is to be in the digital space

I am currently undertaking a digital and social media-marketing subject at university. This couldn’t be more relevant to the current climate, as more than ever we are on our phones scrolling Instagram, watching Youtube videos and online shopping.

Seeing which businesses have thrived, as well as the businesses that have been able to adapt to this new environment has been a reminder of the importance of being digital. This has pushed me to look further into what I can offer on the various digital platforms.

Below is content Tommy shot of me at home during lock down for Sabo Skirt. We were able to work with various online fashion boutiques during lockdown.

4. How great working out from home is

Pre-covid, the studio was like a second home for me. Going to class was part of my daily routine. I loved having a chat with the teachers, and I enjoyed being in another space apart from my home.

However, isolation has made me realise how great training from home is! There are so many free Youtube workouts that are super effective. Pamela Reif and Sami Clarke both have great real time videos, I highly recommend giving them a go.

5. How special friends and family are

Although out of lock down, I still haven’t been able to give my grandparents a hug. I will never take these moments for granted.

This isolation period has left me feeling a lot more grateful for the amazing people in my life. When I have been out, it seems more special than ever before.

I promise myself that post Covid-19 I will take what I’ve learnt to be the best version of myself - A calmer, more grateful and happier Dom.
